2024 THEME

The theme for the 2024 festival is Residential School Warriors. This theme will shed light on the resilience and testimonials of individuals affected by residential schools, playing a crucial role in the reconciliation process.

 

The phrase "Residential School Warriors" is utilized to honour and recognize individuals who have braved the challenges of residential schools. The designation "Residential School Warriors" is a considered choice aimed at empowering the survivors as well as communities, nurturing a narrative of resilience, and encouraging a wider understanding and conversation towards reconciliation.

The Weengushk International Film Festival (WIFF) is a registered charitable not-for-profit organization dedicated to celebrating storytelling and promoting Indigenous cultures through cinematic arts.

 

Over the years, this festival has grown into a significant cultural event in Northern Ontario, providing a platform for both emerging and established filmmakers, particularly from Indigenous communities. Annually exploring new themes reflecting various aspects of life, culture, and societal issues, WIFF continues to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of Indigenous heritage and contemporary artistic expressions, while embodying a mission of societal betterment and cultural enlightenment.
